ASSOCIATE ART DIRECTOR (MALTA, ON-SITE)
RESPONSIBILITIES
We’re looking for an Associate Art Director to support the definition and execution of the project’s artistic vision. In this role, you will work closely with the Art Director, Creative Director, and the wider Art team to help shape, maintain, and deliver a cohesive visual style for the game.
You’ll play a hands-on role in guiding artists, contributing creatively, and ensuring high-quality art production while fostering a healthy, motivated team environment. This is an ideal role for a senior artist or lead looking to step further into art direction within a AAA environment and focuses on ensuring strong artistic execution and consistency within an evolving production environment, helping translate creative intent into clear, actionable direction for the art team.
Support the Art Director in defining and maintaining the artistic direction of the project
Help guide the creation of art content in line with the project’s visual pillars
Collaborate closely with the Creative Director and cross-disciplinary teams while maintaining clear ownership of artistic decisions and visual execution
Provide artistic feedback and mentorship to Concept Artists, 3D Artists, and other art disciplines
Contribute directly to concept art, visual development, and problem-solving
Help maintain art quality, consistency, and style adherence across assets
Assist in keeping team morale healthy through clear communication and supportive leadership
Participate in reviews, planning, estimation, and tracking of art tasks with Production
Support the development of out-of-game artwork such as key art and marketing assets
REQUIREMENTS
6+ years of professional game development experience, including leadership or senior-level responsibilities
Experience as a Lead Artist, or Associate Art Director role
Solid understanding of how form, colour, light, composition, silhouette, and structure create emotional impact
Experience contributing to or maintaining a visual style guide (mood boards, references, visual language)
Ability to receive feedback and adapt quickly
Comfortable making artistic decisions in situations with incomplete or changing design input
Good understanding of 3D art pipelines and technical constraints across modern game engines
Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills in English
Experience collaborating with Production and other departments
Participation in recruitment or onboarding of art team members is a plus
Good knowledge of the video games market and visual trends
Passion for game art and visual storytelling
Shipped at least 1–2 games, preferably including a AAA title
Preferences
Hands-on experience with Maya/Max/Modo, Photoshop, ZBrush, Substance Painter, and baking tools
Experience with AAA game engines like Unreal
Strong grounding in art fundamentals and visual culture
Interest in new technologies and artistic innovation within games
Ability to help organize art workflows and asset production processes
Ambition to grow into a full Art Director role
